Focus Questions:Cheif Joseph

Chief Joseph was a very important person. He tried to stand up for what was right for his people. People became aware of what the U.S. was doing to the Native Americans. They were being forced onto reservations and Chief Joseph wanted people to know about it. He spoke out against them and tried to keep his people on the land that was rightfully his. People started to listen and eventually started caring.
Chief Joseph was a logical person. He was also very caring toward his people. He knew when the military threatened him, to go along with what they wanted. Military resistance would have been useless and he knew that. He thought it through and started walking with his people to Idaho.
When they were all on there way to Idaho, some of his younger warriors broke off and decided to kill some of the settlers. This did not go along at all with the army. They started to pursue Chief Joseph and his people. Chief Joseph had about 700 people to fight with but about 200 of them were soldiers. He knew that there was no other option so he fought and fended off 2,000 soldiers in eight different battles. He eventually gave up and by doing so was promised to be sent back to his homeland. He was not sent back unfortunately. Instead, he was sent to an Indian reservation along with his people.
The world might never have known of what the U.S. did to the native Americans if it were not for Chief Joseph. He should be remembered because he knew what was right and stood up and spoke for it. We should all remember him and do the same whenever we can. You should always do what is right no matter what the consequences are.
